"VALENTINES DAY" (2/4/2002)

Who is Valentine, and why is he so important, that he has to have a day named after him in his honor ? Valentines day, to me, is not really anymore special of a day than any other. As a matter of fact, it usually is the day I least want to see because of my disbelief in it and that makes other people I know act different and feel wierd around me.

Most people I know, for some reason, all feel that Valentine's day is important to celebrate. I personally feel that love is something that should be celebrated everyday of our lives, especially in intimate relationships. When I see couples spend all of their money on each other though, just because the date happens to be febuary fourteenth, I usually have mixed feelings about seeing such activity that is simply following a tradition. I think its nice to see the people giving each other things and exchanging gifts and offerings of friendship and love. However, I can't stand the the fact that so many people make a great big deal out of this day and without explanation. Most people, when asked about the meaning behind it, dont even have a clear answer or even know who Valentine is, or the history of the tradition that is celebrated febuary fourteenth. This is something that I find humurous in a way actually but not surprising. Simply because most people do follow the leader and copy, off of each other, especially since the nature of a human beings is to do such and we are always trying to immulate what it seen going on around us.

When Valentine's day rolls around, each year I notice how peoples personalities sometimes almost instantly and dramatically change. Though most people are in a good mood on Valentine's day, some people are in their worst moods on febuary fourteenth, especially if they have just broken up with someone or just got out of a relationship. Some people don't always have a special person in particular to share febuary fourteenth with and these people are the one's who sometimes feel left out of the celebration.

I personally feel people shouldnt get so involved with these festivities connected with Valentine's day because in my opinion, it is all just a big commercial that ive seen way too many times already and I want to turn the channel everytime I see it. I think that if people of this country are wise enough to see the money making scheme behind the spectacle then they would realize the amount of money that they spend every year for holidays and theyd probably would want to spend less than they are used to for these things and may even no longer have the desire to celebrate certain days when they think about it. I feel the people should think more about what they are doing, especially with their finances being that we are in a state of recession currently and (never finished)
